Uncertain Future For Snowdonia Outdoor Centre
19th September 2011
The Aberglaslyn Hall Outdoor Centre near Beddgelert, Snowdonia could be put up for sale by Leicestershire County Council. The Council are currently reviewing the cost of operating their 3 outdoor centres, two of which are located in Leicestershire. The 67 staff employed across the three centres have been informed that a consultation will take place. The Conservative-led council is aiming to cut £79m from its budget over the next four years. Tony Mulhearn, assistant director of children and young people's services at the county council said: "When these services were established back in the 1950s and '60s it was very much that the local authority was the provider of those services. What we need to do is to make sure that we're getting the best value for money from those services and that we're providing the best for young people and whether we're the people to do that or whether we commission the service."
Aberglaslyn is situated in sixty-five acres of wooded grounds and open moorland and is ideally located in the Snowdonia National Park of North Wales. It offers dormitory style accommodation for up to 48 people and serves as a residential centre for groups wishing to participate in outdoor activities and environmental education. Activities offered include Canoeing, Coastal Activities, Coastal Studies, Gorge Walking, Mountain Activities, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing and Abseiling.
