£250,000 Refurbishment at Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre Despite Cuts
8th August 2011
Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre has announced that it will benefit from a £250,000 refurbishment programme this winter despite recent funding cuts leading to redundancies. The refurbishment is being funded by the "myplace" lottery-funded scheme set up by the last government. This news comes as the outdoor education service has announced two redundancies to reduce costs.
Rob Brindley, Service Manager for the council's outdoor education centres said: "While it's a negative thing for the people involved, on the positive side Dorset County Council has been very supporting and are continuing to keep them open. A lot of other local authorities are closing outdoor education centres because it's a non-statutory service. We're keeping all four centres open although sadly we've had to make savings." Weymouth outdoor education services include Carey Camp, Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre, the Ancient Technology Centre at Cranborne and Leeson House Field Studies Centre.
