BSES Will Continue Arctic Expeditions
8th August 2011
The Executive Director of the British Schools Exploring Society has said that they will continue to offer Arctic Expeditions as more information emerges around the incident that led to the death of a young explorer in Svalbard, Norway. Lieut Gen Peter Pearson said "We have been coming here for 40 years and we have never experienced anything like this." 17 year old Horatio Chapple was mauled to death by a Polar Bear who entered the expedition's campsite on the Arctic island as the group slept. It has emerged that an explosive trip wire designed to scare off approaching animals failed to trigger and Norwegian police have revealed that the rifle used by the Expedition Leader failed to fire four times before eventually being used to kill the attacking Bear.
