Bournemouth Pier Adventure Centre Plans
10th June 2011
Openwide International have submitted a planning application to turn Bournemouth's Pier Theatre into an indoor Adventure Centre featuring climbing walls and indoor surfing. Steve Cutbush, Managing Director of Openwide, said: "We have worked hard to make sure the highest standards of design are adopted in this scheme and ensure it retains the structural integrity of the original building." Bournemouth Pier dates back to 1856. During the second world war the pier was sectioned for defence purposes, but was reopened with a temporary gangway in August 1945 and fully repaired between 1946 aand 1950. In 1960 an 850 seat pavillion was finally added, which became a popular summer show attraction. Between 1979 and 1981 the pier was extensively rebuilt in concrete at the cost of £1.7 million, which included a two story leisure centre at the entrance.
